Countries in Africa continue to seek ways to improve foundational learning outcomes. Conversations at FLEX 2024 explored several initiatives that are producing results in this regard. But how can we ensure sustainability? How do we bridge the link between systems-level reforms and classroom practices, especially around teaching methods?
On the margins of the FLEX 2024 in Kigali, ADEA’s Jacqueline Jere-Folotiya sat with Dr. Benjamin Piper, the Global Education Director at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to explore the best ways to entrench reforms and ensure that countries can sustainably make gains with regards to foundational learning in Africa. Ben shares some interesting nuggets on how countries can successfully scale successful foundational learning initiatives, by prioritizing a few aspects of the program that can get children reading and writing effectively, merged with a strong accountability structure.
