From Conflict to Growth – Foundational Learning Progress in South Sudan

South Sudan is the youngest country in Africa. In the aftermath of its liberation struggle, the country is confronted with myriad socio-economic challenges, amidst which it must also push for growth, progress, and prosperity for its population. Education remains at the base of these ambitions. But the education sector is making its way through various challenges: 2.8 million children are not attending any form of education, the literacy rate is at 44.1 percent, and limited financial, infrastructural, and human capital resources.

On the margins of the 2024 Africa Foundational Learning Exchange, we sat with the Minister of General Education and Instruction in South Sudan, Honourable Awut Deng Acuil, to understand progress in the education sector, especially in the delivery of foundational learning, how the sector is dealing with out of school children, addressing the education infrastructure gap, and delivering quality education services to the people of South Sudan.

Watch our podcast to learn the innovative approaches Honourable Acuil and her ministry are implementing in South Sudan.
