Preparatory workshop for the ADEA’s Triennale 2017

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire – July 29, 2015. The Association for the Development of Education in Africa – commonly known as ADEA – is now in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire in the framework of the African Development Bank’s relocation from Tunis, and it is organizing from July 29th to 31st 2015, its first preparatory workshop for the Triennale 2017.

ADEA's Triennale (formerly Biennale) is the most important global event on education and training in Africa, not only for the content of the discussions but also for the quality of the analytical work and high level participants invited. Triennale brings together heads of state, a significant number of African ministers of education and training, representatives of cooperation and development agencies supporting education in Africa and practitioners and researchers. Representatives of civil society, youth, private sector and other stakeholders and actors such as diaspora are also invited.

ADEA is first and foremost a forum for policy dialogue. Established in 1988 as a framework for better coordination among development agencies, it has evolved into a pan-African institution built on a genuine partnership between African ministries of education and training and their technical and external partners.

From 1993 to 2008, the Association organized eight Biennial Meetings on different themes, and held its first Triennale in 2012 in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) on the theme “Promoting critical knowledge, skills and qualifications for sustainable development in Africa: How to design and implement an effective response by education and training systems”.  The Strategic Framework document which stemmed from ADEA’s first Triennale in order to guide the implementation of its recommendations was also endorsed by the Heads of State attending the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa in January 2013.

The preparatory workshop will see the participation of the Chair of the ADEA Executive Committee, Mr. Peter Materu, also Sector Manager  Education of the World Bank for Central and West Africa Region, the ADEA Executive Secretary, Ms. Oley Dibba-Wadda and many other high profile ADEA’s members and staff.

About ADEA: The Association for the Development of Education in Africa is first and foremost a forum for policy dialogue. Founded in 1988 at the instigation of the World Bank, it has evolved into a pan-African institution based within the African Development Bank (AfDB). It acts as a catalyst for reforms and promising policies and practices through the pooling of ideas, experience, lessons learned and knowledge. One of its major objectives is to encourage exchanges between ministries of education and between them and development agencies.
