Kwame Akyeampong
Kwame Akyeampong is a Professor of International Education and Development with more than 30 years’ academic experience. He began his career as a mathematics and chemistry teacher in Ghanaian high schools before joining the University of Cape Coast in 1989, later serving as Director of the Institute of Education. In 2004 he moved to the UK to join the University of Sussex, and since 2020 he has been at The Open University, where he founded the Centre for the Study of Global Development.
He has published widely on education and development, bringing critical, practice-grounded perspectives to policy in African education, drawing on the experiences of policymakers, school leaders, teachers, and students.
Internationally, Professor Akyeampong has worked with various development partners including UNESCO, JICA, FCDO, and the World Bank, and from 2011 to 2013 he served as Senior Policy Analyst for UNESCO’s Education for All Global Monitoring Report. He currently serves on the boards of T-TEL Ghana, the Luminos Fund, and Teaching at the Right Level Africa; co-chairs the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP); is a strategic advisor to the Jacobs Foundation; and is a Senior Fellow at the Ghana Center for Democratic Development. He is also a Richard von Weizsäcker Fellow at the Robert Bosch Academy in Berlin and a Chen Yidan Visiting Fellow at Harvard University Graduate School for Education.
