NBThe 8th edition will focus on digital books, their contributions and development prospects for children's books in French-speaking Africa, through a regional event piloted by the Educational Resources project of the Institut Français de Paris.

The main objectives of the event are to

  • To showcase national productions of children's books and demonstrate their educational value;
  • Encourage young Guineans to love books and reading;
  • To create opportunities for young readers to come into contact with a variety of suitable books from different backgrounds, in order to foster a taste for and habits of reading;

Format : a public event featuring exhibitions and sales, book signings, various literary activities in schools, inter-school reading games, distribution of bibliomalles to schools, a training workshop for authors of children's books in national languages, official launches of new titles, themed activities at specialized stands.

Participants: schoolchildren, the priority of the Fair, with public and private primary and secondary schools in the 5 Communes of Conakry visiting the stands of the publishers and booksellers present (classes supervised by teachers), taking part in the “Book duel” reading games, with 10 pupils per school (5 boys and 5 girls). These games will culminate in the issue of book vouchers donated by the Show's sponsors, enabling schools and pupils to purchase books of their choice at the various stands.

Expected guests: Publishers and writers of children's books from 16 French-speaking African countries, Canada (Quebec) and France are expected to attend.

Targeted results:

The project has the following objectives:

  • Move towards recognition and establishment of the official Children's Book Fair as a “national cultural institution”;
  • Support the mobilization of authorities and players in the book and education sectors, to help build a youthful awareness of books and reading;
  • Encourage the effective involvement of French-speaking booksellers, publishers and writers of children's books;
  • Support reading, one of the keys to knowledge, whatever the medium, with presentations by Guinean and African children's authors in primary and secondary schools in the communes surrounding the 5 exhibition points;
  • Promote children's literature in French and African languages.

The indicators for achieving these objectives will be measured in terms of the number of primary and secondary schools (number of pupils and schools) visiting the exhibition sites, and in particular those taking part in the “Duel des livres” reading games. It is planned to invite around ten local schools in each commune, with around 50 pupils per school or class (i.e. over 3,000 pupils) to visit the stands, talk to the professionals and take part in the reading games.

A total of 49 professional stands are planned, reserved for publishers, booksellers, NGOs and other institutions exhibiting at the five sites.
