25th April 2016 – Abidjan: A delegation of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Steering Committee, led by Ms. Oley Dibba-Wadda, ADEA Executive Secretary, met with Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss opportunities for strengthen the strategic partnership between AfDB and ADEA as well as to discuss the role of AfDB during the upcoming ADEA 2017 Triennale scheduled for 15th to 17th March, 2017 in Marrakesh, Kingdom of Morocco.

The ADEA delegation was composed of H.E. Ms. Kandia Camara, Minister of National Education of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire; H.E. Prof. Mary Teuw Niane, Minister of Higher Education and Research of the Republic of Senegal; Dr. Peter Materu, Director, Education and Learning of  MasterCard Foundation; Dr. Sajitha Bashir, Practice Manager, Education, for Eastern and Southern Africa of the World Bank Group; Prof. Aminata Sall Diallo, Special Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Research of the Republic of Senegal and Ms. Oley Dibba-Wadda, Executive Secretary of ADEA.

During the courtesy call, the ADEA delegation had the opportunity to welcome and congratulate President Adesina as the 8th elected President of the African Development Bank Group.  The ADEA delegation also took the opportunity to express the appreciation of the ADEA Steering Committee for the AfDB’s hosting and support to ADEA.  The delegation demonstrated the role of ADEA and its contribution at all level of education in Africa; as well as the complementary role AfDB and ADEA has to work towards the High 5 vision of the AfDB across the entire education sector in Africa. 

President Adesina congratulated ADEA for its strategic and leadership role in education in Africa and encouraged ADEA to continue to enhance and strengthen the partnership collaboration with the Bank particularly in the area of youth employment and entrepreneurship and the education of the girl child in Africa to reinforce the development of the African human capital in education. 

The delegation invited President Adesina as Key Note Speaker as well as to moderate the Presidential round table discussion at the official plenary opening of the upcoming ADEA Triennale on the 15th March 2017 in Morocco. The ADEA delegation further requested on behalf of the Ministers of Education in Africa to facilitate the possibility of a roundtable discussion between the African Ministers of Finance and of the Ministers of Education to deliberate on effective financing of education in Africa during the Triennale in March 2017.

The Triennale is ADEA’s flagship event and will focus on ensuring that the African Agenda 2063 is implemented, monitored and situated within the 2030 Global Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
