The first country report in the 2024 Spotlight Report series – the Spotlight on South Africa report – will be released on Thursday 14th March, during the annual Lekgotla education gathering in South Africa. This report was developed in collaboration with the Department for Basic Education of South Africa.

The 2024 report offers a diagnosis of the current state of foundational education in South Africa, with a focus on the curriculum. It presents concrete actions to help improve basic skills, teacher support mechanisms and learning assessments.

This country report is part of the Spotlight Report series produced in partnership with the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report (UNESCO-GEMR) and the African Union on foundational learning in Africa.

The South African report launch will be followed by country reports for Mauritania, Uganda and Zambia as well as the continental report due out in April.
