ADEA joins the #TranslateAStory Initiative
Raise your hand if you remember your favourite book from childhood. We certainly do! The value an exciting read brings into a child’s life knows no bounds.
To make quality early-grade reading materials available in a variety of languages, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) joined several partners (i.e. African Storybook, Creative Commons, Global Book Alliance, Global Digital Library, Learning Equality, Norway, Pratham Book's Story Weaver, The Asia Foundation, UNESCO, UNHCR, and Verizon) in co-organizing a month-long virtual translation initiative – known as #TranslateAStory.
As 1.57 billion children and youth globally have been obliged to not going to school amid the COVID-19 outbreak, the need for openly available educational materials (like storybooks) that can help children stay engaged while learning at home is more urgent than ever.
To support these efforts, we need the help of bilingual folks:
- If you are fluent in English and another language, please consider volunteering with us in this sprint to translate children’s stories from English into your language. One hour of your time can make a huge impact.
- If you are fluent in English and another language and are a language professional (e.g. interpreter, linguist, professor, and so forth), please consider sharing your time to review our volunteers’ translations. The faster we can verify translations, the sooner the books will be available to children.
The sprint begins at the end of April, so register today to #TranslateAStory!
Inform your contacts about this opportunity to build a community amid the COVID-19 crisis and help bring quality reading materials to children who need them.
