The Agreement was signed by the Senior Representative of the JICA Office in Tunisia, Taro Kikuchi and the Executive Secretary of ADEA, Oley Dibba Wadda. Also attending the signing ceremony were Désiré Vencatachellum, the Director for fund mobilization of the AfDB, ADEA’s host institution and Karim Chabir, Senior Program Officer for technical cooperation from the JICA Office in Tunisia.
JICA has been a steady supporter of ADEA since its early years. It became a member of ADEA in 2004 and led ADEA’s Working Group on Mathematics and Science Education (WGMSE) over a period of 10 years. Under JICA’s leadership, WGMSE and its host institution CEMASTEA (the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa) have trained over 1200 science and math educators in 27 African countries.
Today JICA continues to support ADEA’s core activities as well as the Inter-Country Quality Node on Mathematics and Science Education (ICQN-MSE), which promotes better teaching and learning in Maths and Science as a basis for industrial and technological development, as well as social and economic development.
During the period JICA has supported ADEA, the Association has evolved from a donor’s club to a Pan-African organization based in Africa and steered by African Ministries of Education and development agencies working in partnership to improve the quality of education in Africa.
