The launching event took place in Grahamstown, South Africa, on the campus of Rhodes University, hosting the Highway Africa Conference and the World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC), in a joyful atmosphere galvanized by the World Cup.
Mrs Yvonne Chaka Chaka, renowned South African singer and UN ambassador was also at the launch to encourage ADEA’s endeavors for better education journalism on the continent.
Three members of ADEA were in Grahamstown for the launch: ADEA’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Ahlin Byll-Cataria, ADEA’s Communication Officer and manager of The Award, Thanh-Hoa Desruelles and Mr. Lawalley Cole, Coordinator of ADEA’s Working Group on Communication for Education and Development (WGCOMED).
Several hundred journalists and journalism educators from the whole African continent attending Highway Africa and WEJC were present at the launch.
“We are still expressing the desire to mainstream the continent in a global world but how do we do this? It is when we begin to understand the basic challenges of economies, social welfare and education as well as the world around us.”
