ADEA and key partners launch the African Chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Book Club

The Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA); the African Publishers Network (APNET); the Pan-African Writers Association (PAWA); the Pan-African Booksellers Association (PABA); the African Library and Information Associations and Institutions (AfLIA) and Borders Literature for all Nations, with the key support of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Namibia will launch on 23rd April 2021 – World Book Day – the African Chapter of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Book Club.

This new multilingual initiative sees the book sector organizations from across the African continent come together and commit to augmenting the UN SDG Book Club with a collection of English, French, Arabic and Kiswahili books to support educating all children about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In addition, an honorary book in an indigenous African language will be included in the list of books picked every two months from across the continent by a Selection Committees comprised of experienced writers, publishers, booksellers, and editors. The SDG Book Club selection criteria cut across fiction, non-fiction and children’s books in other genres.

To this end, submissions are open now at http://bit.ly/3rkjb96

As this is the UN Decade for Action on the SDGs, it is crucial that parents and educators join forces to raise children with a healthy curiosity and understanding about how to make the world a better place for all!

About the SDG Book Club

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Book Club was launched at Bologna International Childrens Book Fair in 2019 and aims to use books as a tool to encourage children ages 6-12 to interact with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through a curated reading list of books from around the world related to each of the 17 SDGs in all six official UN languages—Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

About the SDGs

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by world leaders at the historic Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. Encompassing everything from health, to gender equality, and education, the Goals will mobilize efforts around the world to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.
